BASIC HORSEMANSHIP CAMP
GALLERY OF PICTURES!

The week of July 31st to August 3rd , 2007 was a Basic Horsemanship Camp held at the Ferry County Fairgrounds hosted by Wildwind Farm.   The group was kept small for instructor Melinda Thomas to be able to give a lot of excellent instruction.  The kids aged 9-12 years old were given four hours of instruction each day and walked away with a lot of knowledge, and more confidence in their abilities.

The objective of the camp was for beginning riders to learn all their basics from the ground up and safety rules.  The first day consisted of safely approaching a horse, haltering, tieing a quick release knot, leading, grooming, and by the end of the day the students were lunging their horses.   The next few days they learned how to saddle on their own and learned correct seat position up through the trot.  During the week, the kids learned independence with their horses, or learned to ask other kids for help.  Some of the more advanced kids learned leadership skills in helping others.  Most importantly, they made new friends!

The final day consisted of a riding test to show all the knowledge they learned through the week.  All the students passed the course with flying colors and received certificates of achievement.  Special awards were given out to a select few for their outstanding work and abilities.  “MOST IMPROVED” went to Abby Sheffield who brought a new horse.  She had never even ridden her horse until the camp and was riding though the trot by the end of the week.  “MOST HELPFUL” went to Savannah Bowe who was more experienced then some of the students and she helped pick up feet, saddle, bridle and more.  “MOST POSITIVE ATTITUDE” went to Cora VanSlyke who has been having trouble with controlling her horse.  She never gave up and with what she learned in her ground work, she got a handle on her horse and was riding him again with the rest of the students.
